FIELD NOTE 01
Quick facts
The clearest current answer comes from developer-authored launch discussions, not a generic playtime database. The ranges below preserve the distinction between a main run, extra completionist time, a derived combined range and one player's secondary estimate.
Steam hosts the store, discussions and user reviews, but Valve does not publish an official completion-time figure for Sludgineers. Every time on this page is attributed to its actual source.
| Goal | Current estimate | Evidence | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main game | About 4 hours | Developer | Approximate fresh-run target |
| Completionist play | 2–3 additional hours | Developer | Extra time; strategy-dependent |
| Completion-focused total | About 6–7 hours | Derived | Approximate derived total: 4 + 2–3 |
| Current player estimate | 3.5–5 hours | Steam review | Secondary, anecdotal corroboration |
FIELD NOTE 02
Main-game time
In the full-release Reddit announcement, developer Andy Wiltshire answered a direct playtime question with about 4 hours for the main game. A separate launch-day Steam Discussion reply from a Funk developer describes a fresh main run as roughly 4–4.5 hours. The two answers are close enough to support the concise headline estimate without pretending every run lands on the same minute.
The Steam developer reply also describes Sludgineers as linear levels. That helps explain what the main-game estimate covers: moving through the current level sequence and reaching the game's ending, rather than playing an open-ended sandbox. It does not reveal a fastest route or make four hours a deadline.
FIELD NOTE 03
Completionist time
The developer estimates roughly 2–3 additional hours for completionist play and explicitly says the result depends on strategy. Adding that range to the four-hour main estimate gives about 6–7 hours. This site labels that number as an approximate derived total because the developer supplied the two parts, not the combined arithmetic as a guarantee.
Completionist play is broader than simply reaching the end. Current achievements separate Pollution Solution, which requires completing the game, from Completionist, which requires purchasing all upgrades. Other achievements cover full equipment upgrades, all refineries, all drones and collection milestones, so the optional cleanup after the ending can vary with what remains in a particular run.
FIELD NOTE 04
Why playtime varies
Strategy affects how often you repeat jobs, which bottleneck you upgrade first and how quickly new areas or systems become useful. A purchase that removes the active constraint can shorten the route; spending on a system that is not limiting progress may add repetition. That is why the developer attaches a strategy caveat to both main and completion estimates.
Your goal matters too. A main-only run can stop after the game-completion target. A completion-focused run may continue through the upgrade tree, quests, refinery milestones, tools, power-ups and remaining achievements. Familiarity with the Demo may reduce learning time, but Demo playtime is not part of the stated full-game estimate and Demo balance is not treated as current data.
- Upgrade choices and the bottleneck they address
- How often a level or job is repeated
- Quest and region-unlock routing
- Whether you stop at the ending or pursue optional completion
- Prior Demo familiarity without carrying over Demo values
FIELD NOTE 05
Current player corroboration
One current Steam reviewer reports a game-time estimate of 3.5–5 hours and links a full walkthrough. That range is useful because it overlaps the developer's main-game estimate, but it remains one player's report rather than a representative average.
The walkthrough linked by that review is currently private and could not be inspected during this verification pass. No upgrade values, area order, refinery formulas or other mechanics were extracted from it. The review supports only the labeled secondary time range visible in its text.
FIELD NOTE 06
Demo and full-game context
The Demo teaches the cleanup, collection, refinery, upgrade, map and quest loop, but the official launch announcement says the full version adds a whole new map, progressively larger and more complex levels, new pollution, tools, quests, new and improved power-ups, many upgrades and abilities, refinery automation and drones.
That wider scope is why a Demo completion time should not be substituted for the full-game estimate. Demo knowledge can make the controls and systems more familiar, yet exact costs, balance, routes and formulas still need current-build evidence.
FIELD NOTE 07
Achievements tied to completion
Pollution Solution and Completionist define two different current goals: finish the game, and purchase every upgrade. Regional Expansion, Side Gig and the equipment/refinery achievements can help identify which systems remain unfinished without turning the achievement list into a mandatory route.
Use the progression, levels, quests, upgrade-tree and refinery guides to understand those systems, then use the complete achievements guide to track the official 25-item set. None of those pages claims that every player will reach 100% inside the derived 6–7 hour window.
- Pollution Solution — Complete the game
- Completionist — Purchase all upgrades
- Fully Operational — All refineries unlocked
- Drone Swarm — All drones unlocked
- Maximum Suckage, Jacked and Filtration Amplification — full tool upgrades
